Additives

There are many different kinds of additives, but they can basically be classified in one of two ways -- nutritional and chemical.

Chemical additives are used to correct water chemistry levels. These additives can be used to boost calcium, alkalinity, PH, etc.

Nutritional additives are products that can be added either directly to fish food to improve the nutritional value of that particular food or to the water in the tank for the benefit of animals. Phytoplankton is a microscopic food source that is added directly to the tank water to benefit corals and invertebrates.

ALWAYS follow manufacturers directions as closely as possible. Many products have directions of a particular measurement of product to so many gallons of water. Also, when using chemical additives, you should never dose an element for which you are not testing for. In other words, if you are boosting your alkalinity, you need to be able to test your alkalinity to see how high you have raised it to make sure you are not overdosing.
